Infinity Skin Clinic Questions & Answers

FRAXEL

What does it do?
Fraxel treatments repair damaged skin by treating only a fraction of skin at a time leaving the treated areas surrounded by unaffected, healthy tissue. This ‘fractional’ treatment allows the skin to heal much faster than a procedure that treats the entire area at once.

How does it work?
The Fraxel laser passes through the top layer of skin to reach the dermis below. The effect creates thousands of tiny, microscopic areas of thermal damage that stimulate the body’s own wound healing response – particularly new collagen production and the replacement of damaged skin surfaces with new epidermal skin.

You will notice changes in colour and texture after the first few treatments although visible improvements to wrinkles and scars may be slower – perhaps up to 6 months. The number of Fraxel treatments you require depends on the condition to be treated.

Are there any side effects?
You may experience some discomfort during the procedure including a prickling sensation. Afterwards you should expect to have a pink tone and mild swelling for 1 to 2 days.

Wrinkle TreatmentsThe Fraxel is an exciting new addition to our range of medical grade lasers. The Fraxel laser is the latest breakthrough in restoring ageing and sun-damaged skin. It is also now the treatment of choice for acne scars, and unlike IPL, can be used on all skin types including Asian and darker skin.

The Fraxel laser improves the skin’s tone and texture, tightening the skin and improving wrinkles, as well as removing unsightly brown pigmentation spots. It is useful for treating the face, neck, décolletage and back of the hands.

Unlike the old-fashioned CO2 resurfacing laser which peels off the skin’s top layers, the Fraxel works by treating part of the skin’s surface (approximately 20-25% per treatment) in a session. allowing dramatic cosmetic improvement without the downtime, discomfort, and risks of traditional laser resurfacing.

The skin’s appearance is improved with each and every treatment session. Three to five treatments spaced 4 weeks apart are usually required. The improvement continues to increase for weeks to months after treatment as continued collagen production and remodeling occurs.

The Fraxel is now the best treatment for a range of conditions, including:

  1. Dark pigmentation spots and sundamage, including melasma (pigmentation of pregnancy)
  2. Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and lips
  3. Improvement of skin tone and texture on the face & neck, decolletage and back of the hands
  4. Acne scars
  5. Hypopigmented (white) or atrophic scars including surgical scars & stretch marks

Treatments are safe and effective, and are performed using a topical local anaesthetic cream applied to the skin one hour prior to treatment in the rooms. The treatment itself usually takes about 20-30 minutes, and afterwards it feels like a mild sunburn. You may experience mild redness or puffiness for 1-2 days after the treatment, a bit like windburn when you ski.

Some patients can return to routine activities (including work and social events) the same day, while some require 1-2 days off (treatment Fri – return to work Mon).
